Changing the width of text displayed

How can I change the width of the text displayed on a page?

I have created content using the text editor - but for some reason the output is too narrow (e.g centering the page does not place the text anywhere near the center of the page).

How do I widen the text displayed.? I have looked in runtime.css but cannot seem to identify where to make the change.

may all the "script-gods" forgive me with my simple - nonscript solution.
Create a picture of your background - make it as long as you want the page to be and just a few pixels high - upload it into your images folder - and add it on the top of each page you want to be as wide.
