Upload images through ftp?

With several thousand jpgs, and as many gifs, I'd like to upload them via ftp, not using the file import deal. Is this possible?

Right now I can't change the permissions on the /import folder to accept uploads. What needs to be done to change that? Neither through the cPanel file manager or with CuteFTP will the change be accepted.

jpgs should go to the images folder.

You couldn't change permissions most likely because PHP owns those folders. Here is the thread where Mike Morrison whipped up a script to take care of permission:
