I have uploaded a couple of the free wavy templates and the problem that I have with them is that they do not fill the window at all. Also anything that I add to the page will not utilize the right side of the template. So everything is squished over on the left side. Is there anything that I can do to fix this? Thank you!

Hi,

If you are wanting to shift the content over to the left hand side more, put the info in to the far right cell, and then use text module on the left and middle cells, but save them with out any information in them (ie blank). This should justify the information towards the right side of the screen. ;)

take a look at my site and you'll see what she's talking about.. I need a fix for it too. Its a complete waste of space and no matter where you put data in any cell there is still that divided dead space on the far right of every page. Anyone know what to do? Yes, they're free - its the 'neutral wave' series. but maybe there's a bug fix.

thanks! CC

This is a fixed-width template optimized for screen resolution of 800x600.

lwyau,

I tried to post the URL twice for you and its telling me that it will have to wait for moderator approval. Maybe because I'm new.

I'm getting impatient with waiting for approval for the URL link. If you are interested to see what's going on sooner, you can type 'one stop mommy shop' in your google or Ask searchbar and it'll be the first non-sponsored site with a tag "help for overwhelmed moms". Otherwise we'll just wait... thanks CC

Sorry, lwyau, didn't see your post #5. In layman's terms, does that mean, "tough luck, you're stuck with it"?

Yes, but not in that kind of tone ;)

Templates employ one of two width strategies:

1) Variable width: It takes the entire width the browser window provides. Pro: You don't see the "wasted white space". Con: Web page format control is difficult. Sometimes the page look downright ugly when the page width is either stretched or compressed.

2) Fixed width: It takes a fixed amount of width, and usually done to accommodate the lowest common denominator, meaning 800x600 screen resolutions. This is done to avoid the dreadful horizontal scrolling. BTW, we begin to see fixed width in 1024 more and more since 1024x768 is quickly becoming the lowest standard. Con: The "wasted white space" on monitors with larger resolution. Pro: Absolute control over the page format.

Personally, I prefer fixed width template. And in almost all cases, professionally made templates are in fixed width category for the exact same reason.

If you want variable width template, you can either choose another template, or modify the one you use.

modify the one you use

So there is a way to modify this, or would it still cause the problems you mentioned about sidescrolling, etc. if I attempted to modify the fixed template?

Thanks for the template 101, that is helpful.

Modifying a fixed width template into a variable width one is usually more complicated than it seems. You need working knowledge in HTML and CSS, and image editing to pull it off. You start by looking at this file: sohoadmin/program/modules/site_templates/pages/NEUTRAL-Wave-Green/index.html with an HTML Editor.

Thanks Leh,

As soon as the word "complicated" appeared in your post, I dismissed the idea  I'm going consider another template. Now that I've got some content up and running, I'm re-examining the aesthetics and I'm not thrilled with what I have. So this is the excuse I needed to ditch the current template. I don't mind so much the fact that the fixed size is there, as the fact that it is shoved all the way to the left. I have a blog site that's free and I actually am liking the layout of that better than my main site but its some cookie cutter deal that's through google blogger and very limited.. So I'll go back to square one and see what SOHO has to offer again. Still trying to do it all for free since I'm not generating enough revenue yet so limitations will be an issue. I have so much to learn...groan

I really appreciate the bits of education.

p.s. a few details on your last post, Leh,

the 1024 resolution you mentioned seems like it may be an option for me, do you know of an example I could view? What wasted white space would there be on the monitors you spoke of - no worse than what we're seeing on my current site?

Now armed with better knowledge thanks to you, I imagine the soho samples would disclose the pixel resolutions and whether or not they are fixed or variable, so I will go there tomorrow and check that out, perhaps I can view some examples there.

While its my understanding that my layout would basically saved, I recall changing my template the first week I published and I still had to rearrange everything, so I have my work cut out for me.

Okay sorry to ramble. Need to get some sleep.

Your current template is about 800 pixels wide. Couple of 1,000 pixel width sites are:
