Does anyone know where I can get a plug-in to enable my users to have a profile page they can edit themselves. I also want them to be able to connect to other users.

It is a built-in soho feature.

You create a profile database table for all your members. This table needs to have username and password for log-in.

You then do a "batch authentication" (sohoadmin > database tables > batch authentication). This process creates logins for all members.

Thirdly, create a search on the profile table. Members can search other members data. If a member gets hold of his/her own record, he/she will be invited to edit the record if so desired.

is there anyway the user could then add him / herself to another user as a friend? And could a user specify not to be shown in a search results?

If you are looking for a real social networking site builder, soho is not it.
