Setting up different background colors for the different vertical zones

Wondering if there is a way to set up pages where I could place text editors in 2 of the different zones (the 3 horizontal blocks) in the page editor and have a different background color in each zone.

I've tried using a 2 column table in a singe text editor, but could not get the table to span across the entire area. Looked in documentation and have not been able to find anything on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
