Hi,

The best way to stop people copying your images is not to put them on the net in the first place. People will always find a way around whatever you do to protect images.

Sure, you could disable right-click but you will probably put lots of people off using your website. Like lots of other people I hate it when the right mouse click is disabled.

You could add copyright images to your picture, but remember an image can be photomanipulated, or just cropped to removed your visible copyright or branding watermark. Just Don't lose sleep worrying about it...if you ever encounter one of your pictures that has been ripped off, maybe try to feel flattered instead...

Smile Editing Images

Hi Mick,

Thanks for your opinion with regards to coping pictures. I have to beg to differ with regards to the website.

If I come across a website that has locked pictures I don't deviate from the website. It depends on what you want from the website and the reason you surf the web. If it is to copy pictures then of course you will deviate, you have no choice.

I understand that people like ideas and copy them. I guess that is why the CD industry is so unhappy as to the amount of people who copy cd's and dvd's to save a quid.

With that in mind, I take on board what you have said.

Thanks Matt for the info on copying images I will have a look. Thanks gentlemen always a pleasure to get feed back and help.

Here are a few conceptual things that are good to know regarding images on websites.

1. When you include an image on a webpage, you tell the visitor's browser to download the image to the visitor's computer.
2. For the browser to display the image on the visitor's computer, it must download the image first.
3. Whether you like it or not, the image has already been copied to the visitor's computer. It gets there because you include it on the webpage.

People don't just right mouse click to copy pictures !

To reiterate, disabling the right mouse click is...

It's annoying - You don't realise just how much you use right-click until you can't use it!

It's pointless - If you think disabling right-click will protect your source code or images, think again! Anyone who's determined to copy your content or code will do so regardless.

Increased determination - Disabling right-click will only make some people more determined to learn exactly what it is you're hiding.

It's disabling - Mouse gestures that enable quicker navigation are starting to become a feature of browsers.

Opening links in a new window - Disable right-click and you'll alienate those users who like to right click to open links in a new window, pretty quickly.

It's unprofessional - Disabling right click suggests a lack of professionalism to users.

It's insulting - Most of your visitors will come to your site looking to buy something, or to find information. Only a small percentage of your visitors will land at your site with the intention to steal from it.

As I said before "The best way to stop people copying your images is not to put them on the net in the first place". People will always find a way...

Mick
